Charlie Brindell will step down and retire as the chairman of Mill Creek Residential, effective at the end of the quarter. Current President and CEO Bill MacDonald will add the chairman title to his list of roles at the Boca Raton, Florida-based apartment owner, developer and investor.
Brindell spun Mill Creek out of Dallas-based Trammell Crow Residential in 2011 as apartment developers were still working to rebuild their operations after the global financial crisis. MacDonald was one of 70 executives and associates who went with Brindell, who was TCR’s president and CEO at the time, to Mill Creek. The founding partners launched the company with an investment from the Trammell Crow family and a large state public pension.
"Nothing spurred the decision to retire other than the inherent feeling that it is the right time,” Brindell said in a statement shared with Multifamily Dive. “Bill and his team have been laying the foundation for a new generation of exciting growth, expansion and profitability for Mill Creek, and I am looking forward to watching it all unfold, albeit from a different vantage point."
Mill Creek was the third-largest developer in the country on the 2021 National Multifamily Housing Council’s list of top developers with 5,755 starts. The company has developed or acquired more than 43,000 apartment homes across more than 160 communities.
Overall, Mill Creek has 32,500 apartments in its portfolio or in the pipeline in major markets across the country including Seattle, Boston, Dallas and Tampa, Florida. Recently, the company started two projects in Denver.
Brindell spent 28 years working for the Trammell Crow family and its affiliates before founding Mill Creek. He also spent more than three years in commercial mortgage banking at Raleigh, North Carolina-based The Cameron Brown Co. and more than seven years at Southwide Development Co., a Memphis-based industrial real estate management and development firm.
"Charlie had the vision to launch Mill Creek when most people in the industry were hunkering down," MacDonald said in the statement. "Charlie’s positive attitude and leadership helped drive Mill Creek into one of the most respected and prolific rental housing companies in the country. He will certainly be missed."
