Frank H. Cowling Jr., partner and senior vice president of private asset management at Norfolk, Virginia-based real estate firm S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., is retiring after 40 years as a broker in the commercial real estate industry and 30 years with the company, effective March 31.
Cowling joined SLN in 1994 as the vice president of shopping center management, and became a partner in the firm in 1998. For the past 17 years, Cowling has been responsible for managing the assets in a $500 million portfolio of 15 shopping centers in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and over 1,000 apartment units across three properties in Richmond, Virginia.

Last summer, SLN promoted Maggie Spillane to vice president of private asset management, working alongside Cowling to manage the Hampton Roads and Richmond portfolio. With Cowling’s retirement, Spillane will assume his current role, according to Susan Childress, vice president and director of corporate marketing at SLN.
Cowling will remain involved with the firm in a part-time capacity, working with his existing portfolio to share institutional knowledge in addressing daily operational issues, he told Multifamily Dive.
“It has been an honor working for S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. for the last 30 years,” Cowling said in last year’s news release. “I'm thrilled to witness Maggie's advancement within the company and have full confidence she will excel in her new position.”
S.L. Nusbaum brokers, manages and develops multifamily and commercial properties across the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. The company has 181 multifamily properties under management in Virginia, Maryland and the Carolinas, and has developed over 10,000 units across 64 properties, according to the company website.
